On: my eerie telepathic sense + Compagnie Heddy Maalem

In all seriousness, I've developed the ability to summon things with my brain. Like the other day, I was thinking I needed to find this camera or an equivalent for about a quarter of the price. As my luck would have it, I would stumble across this on Amazon that very same day. And yesterday I couldn't stop eating (Flo is on her way) and the delivery man just kept coming back. Creepy huh?

Then just yesterday afternoon, I thought to myself that I've seen a lot of beautiful dance that's produced in Europe, but I've found, as in many of the big US dance companies, few of those companies (the touring sort, large enough and amazing enough to find their way to the States) feature brown skinned dancers and where are all the European black companies? I know they're out there. I often enjoy seeing overseas companies more than domestic ones; I find them to be so much more beautiful and more interesting, but I've never seen African voices within those international companies. So I'm curious. Lucky me, the Joyce is presenting Compagnie Heedy Maalem tonight through the weekend. I don't know much about the company, but that its dancers hail from six African countries and that it is named after its French Algerian founder. The Company is premiering Le Sacre du Printemps, set to Igor Stravinsky's The Rite of Spring, one of my favorite pieces of classical music. Here's a taste:

It's interesting to see the contrast between this interpretation of Stravinsky's ballet and Nijinsky's seminal work (youtube it.) This is quite exciting to watch! Visitwww.heddymaalem.com/ for more information about Compagnie Heddy Maalem.
