2009 Resolution N°1: Leave New York Once Monthly
Traveling is my second love and this year I'm making myself a promise to leave New York once a month. I want to know what's popping off in other cities, what the dance scene is like, eat the food, talk to people, take photos, explore and educate myself. Here's what I've loosely planned through the summer.
January: Philly (first time!) for vintage shopping, cafe hopping, and chilling with my homegirl.
February: DC (first time!) to visit my peoples and to shake my ass a bit in the nation's capital.
March: Niagara Falls? Toronto? Montreal? *shrugs* Somewhere north.
April: N. Hollywood to visit my sister, her new gallery/performance/event space, and to do it up BIG in LA.
May: Boston for my other favorite cousin's graduation from Bible School.
June/July: Europe! The trajectory is Amsterdam, Rotterdam, London, Paris, Copenhagen, Malmo, Gothenberg and Stockholm. Possible work could bring me to Łódź, Poland and Berlin. More on this later...
Later this year, I want to head down to Durham (for the American Dance Festival), Miami, Chicago, Detroit, and Northern Haiti (to visit my other favorite cousin). I think this is possibly the best resolution I've come up with! Go me. I plan to post about each city of course, so stay tuned!

Guide to Fresher Lettuce: 2009 Edition
1. Bonne Année, Bonne Santé! I'm feeling 180° from where I was just a few days ago. The new year brought an incredible momentum that I pray won't evaporate. It feels so good to feel motivated towards an ultimate goal. I'm very excited about this year and as a matter of fact I'm quite proud of all that I accomplished in 2008. I had to sit and remind myself that while it might feel like my drive waned toward the end of the year, all that I'm doing is moving me in the right direction. I can be assured of that. I was recently approached with a request to teach abroad. While I'm not totally confident in my experience, this will only be a rung on my ladder, for better or worse. I just need to stay focused and get a press kit together, most importantly a performance/choreography reel. More on that soon.
2. I spent my first New Year's Eve out this year. I shelled out $30 for the AfroPunk/Coup D'etat Brooklyn Punk N' Paint Party. It was in a loft in Soho with some of the scene's well known live painters lining the walls and Dante's Fried Chicken providing the grub. I rolled solo, and while I generally avoid drinking when I'm not around people I trust, I wanted to throw my inhibitions out with 2008. I happily took advantage of the open bar and the cheap drink tickets and quickly went from nice to inebriated by 1am. I left not long after that, sliding all the way down the steep staircase from the 4th floor walkup, not feeling confident enough in my really high, slightly loose pumps to make down upright. I did manage to snag a number before I stumbled out. Go me. The three-plus-hour trip home was cold and frustrating and my bed couldn't have been more welcoming when I finally got to it. I'm proud of myself for going out alone and having a blast alone and having the good sense to make it home alone and in one piece. I let myself get discouraged sometimes, especially when I'm feeling tired. I want to be more social and this is how I have to make it happen. *pats self on the back*
3. I somehow never got around to making a list of resolutions in 2008 and I feel okay with that because I didn't put pressure on myself to get shit done. I just jumped at opportunities and was patient with the outcomes. This year, I'm going to be more proactive, however, and go a even further than just a list of resolutions. This year's Guide to Fresher Lettuce is a list of predictions. Inspired by this post, these are the moves I'm making in '09, no pressure, simply presence:
1. I will travel outside of New York once a month, exploring US cities through the spring and finally making my way to Europe this summer. I've already contacted former students overseas and friends in the States for advice and places to rest my head. I've gotten affirmative responses from everyone, further solidifying the accuracy of this prophecy!
2. I will set the foundation for being a self-employed Certified Pilates Instructor/Teaching Artist/Performer/Choreographer in 2009. I will develop a brand name, market myself, educate myself and make a comfortable living as an artist. 2009 will be the year I more match my salary currently sitting on my bum, as an artist.
3. I will immerse myself in the young art scene that in 2008 I so longed to be a part of. In 2009, I will have made a name for myself worthy of the interest of the powers that be.
4. In 2009, I will teach and land a performing job overseas.
5. Love will take a backseat to my career in 2009, saving me the distraction and heartache I suffered in 2008.
Here's to maintaining momentum in '09.
Cheers! View blog reactions

Last Shoe Buy of 2008
I wish I had my camera with me on Wednesday! New Year's Eve turned out to be a pretty fun evening, though I chose to roll solo and though I drank far more than I could handle. I still feel a little wonky. Everything fell into place quite beautiful though, most notably the discovery and lucky purchase of these incredible shoes by Report Signature. Gold lame D'Orsay peep toe with sky high 4" clear heel and skull & crystal detail on its super low vamp. Originally priced at around $175, your girl scored these bad boys for a mere $26.50 at 5pm on Wednesday at the best shoe store in the city, Shoegasm on 23rd. More proof that I am quite possibly the world's best shopper.

The trouble with hope...
is that the higher you get, the harder the fall.
I'm cynical that way. Especially when it comes to romance. I designed the lighting for a friend's showcase a few weeks ago. One of the performers hit me up on Myspace with his number. He's cute and very talented, but my instinct is to not get too excited. I don't know him and I can't get caught up on account of all the craziness I'm juggling right now. But I called him and he gushed. I'm flattered for sure, but I don't want get bigheaded about it.
But, what if?

Lighting Broadway Underground
I light a show at BBKings last night! AAAAHHHHHH!!! I'm beside myself! Jared Grimes, an incredible choreographer, teacher, and creator of Broadway Underground needed someone to fill in last minute and I happened to be in the right place at the right time. I know I said I'd given up production work, but this could not be passed up. BB Kings has moving lights dude! Are you kidding?! AHAHAHAH! I'm still beaming from it. The whole night was perfect, stressful, but everything I always loved about lighting. It's similar to dance for me. You breath with the board. You move with it. You plan and perfect. Ah, I had a blast!
The line up was sick too! Jared's choreography has always impressed me. He has phenomenal vision and as a tapper/hip-hop dancer, he's just effing talented! He invites musicians to perform as well. The Drumadics blew me away! And I loved the jam at the end where audience members get to come onstage to show their shit. Had I been able to relinquish my place behind the board, I woulda been up there too heheh!
Man! The perfect start to a new week. Check out the Broadway Underground website at www.broadwayunderground.org. Next show is happening soon!

Posing for Delphine
I'm a huge fan of Delphine Diallo's photography, illustrations, and collages. I sent her a message on MySpace gushing about how amazing I think she is and asking if she'd be interested in taking my portrait. I was hardly expecting a reply, and then she said yes (!). Delphine Diallo is going to take my picture.

Ain't Nothin but a Hoochie Mama (New Headshots)
I got a hold of my new headshots this week. Here's a peek at the first look. I was going for sexy urban chick, sporting the really expensive bathing suit I mentioned last week. I'm still debating on which of the three to settle on.
Which do you like?

On: abandoning the boast, a new ally, and midyear review
So I've been thinking lately, that while it's good to get out of yourself sometimes, I feel that not all habits are that bad and not all not so bad habits need permanent breaking. Case in point: this whole bragging business. I adopted the idea a few months back with the encouragement of a friend, a real advocate of bragging. After practicing the art, albeit not religiously, for some time, I'm ready to go back to my old ways of just keeping my successes and blessings private.
I've been truly uncomfortable these last few months, still feeling like my whatever's happening in my life isn't worthy of public mention, especially when everyone around me is doing bigger, better, or simply different things. It's not that cool to my peers that I've done a European commercial or that I was in a featured dancer in an award winning indie short or that I'm spending my birthday rehearsing for an opera. They're aiming for MTV greatness. I'm trying to get written up in the Times. So then why mention it to them? Not to say that their lack of interest and hateration diminishes the value of my successes for me. I'm just saying, I feel more comfortable when I can simply work on my craft and artistry without attracting negativity and other distractions. So with all that said, I'm abandoning the boast... in the public speaking sense.
In other news, there's a girl at work who's been such a joy and has quickly become my new ally. She and I see things so similarly and she's older so she's got sense. I like her a lot and I'm so happy that she's around. Yaay for brown girls sticking together!
I never did post my resolutions "Fresher Lettuce: 2008 Edition" and so a midyear review:
1. visited Haiti for one month on $500.
2. returned from the afore mentioned trip to a job.
3. signed with an agency and gotten work.
4. performed with a small company in which I learned invaluable lessons in professionalism and artistry.
5. filmed my first commercial.
6. was hired for an opera.
7. was accepted in to Ailey's Independent Study Program again.
8. learned the ins and outs of running and marketing a business on the web.
9. took a few steps closer to being spiritually sound.
10. made a lot of money working freelance and for myself.
11. gave up convenient shit work to do very inconvenient but incredible work thats made me sacrifice, prioritize, and simplify.
12. taken control of the path of my life and being okay with my blue patches.
13. got a raise.
14. gave up that guy.
15. lived a life worth blogging and bragging about :)
Happy 4th you all! Enjoy the long weekend :)

From the bright side...
The dim one is bandaged and back in action--he doesn't seem to be in pain. The actual cost of his treatment turned out to be less than $900 and included shots and his antibiotic medication.
Lucky for me, the commercial I shot on Thursday paid a cool grand, and even after my agent's fees are taken, I'm still left with a nice chunk of change. And it wasn't so bad after all, being a maid. In the end, I had a blast and I got applauded after each take, which was nice.
I'm okay now with not landing Misnomer. That now means I can do a term or two at Ailey beginning in the fall. I'm looking forward to gaining my technique, strength, and stamina back. Plus I leave for Bard a week from Monday. I'm plenty busy and happy about it.

random chatter: momentum, callbacks and recalls
Slowly but surely, the tasks on the list you see on your right are being ticked. Many of them are just inches away from my grasp others simply need a block of devoted time that I can foresee sacrificing in the not too distant future. I've never been so close to getting a legitimate full time dance gig with such a beautiful company of dancers and depending on how the planets align themselves in the next few months, I would be confident in setting a goal to be 100% self employed by the year's end, leaving my job to pursue my interest in teaching, train like mad and work on my yoga certification. That's my life in a dream. Beautiful, happy, and coursing at my own pace.
It's funny how the people sit up and notice when it looks like you're approaching your natural momentum. Suddenly, you're magnetic, you're glowing and people see it. You're making moves, following your path, and signs begin revealing themselves, those moves become easier. It's all just over the horizon.
My submissions at UGLY are beginning to pick up. I went in this week to slate me dancing with vacuum to some draggy disco tune... its a commercial for a high end Swiss skincare product. It took all of three minutes and I had so much fun bugging out in for a room full of agents. Ahahah! Anyway, I'm on hold next week to shoot. I hope I land the gig!
My callback for Syren was a disaster, but I'm so clear on what my weaknesses are in terms of my training and talent (picking up ography and movement quality more quickly, partnering) and my mental and emotional state in auditions (dealing with competition, pacing myself). I know what I need to work on. It's a shame I didn't stick the choreo, because I enjoyed the movement... very balletic and delicate, sweeping and musical. I never get to move like that and it was such a treat. Alas... there will be other auditions.
The second callback for Misnomer on Thursday went well. After three hours of choreography, improv, partnering, lifts, and more choreography, my mind and body were spent! In the end, all seven of the dancers who were called back must wait to hear an answer in the next few months. I feel like I shared as much of myself as I was able to in the time I was given and whatever answer the future reveals is not my business until I meet it. I'm optimistic, but I'm being real when I say the competition is stiff. But I don't know what the choreographer is really looking for and I don't know if I'm a match and everything happens for a reason and in any event, my future is still bright.
Then, I spent the night with him... yessir... and it was so lovely. But I'm straight on all that past internal drama. I've no regrets and no sad story to speak of. We enjoyed each other's company. I've known him for two years, a long time to be involved with someone who isn't interested in being involved. I'm for real good on him. It's taken two years to see it, but I'm clear on the relationship that we have and I don't expect to see it through the new year.
Happy Summer Solstice! Here's to another promising six months!

On: losing my last ally + good karma
1. I lost my last neutral ally at work yesterday. She's an Asian-American musical theater actress adopted by white folks. When I first met her, I got the sense she was someone I could relate to because like me, she's the only girl repping her people in the office; like me, her dance aesthetics spans further than what the school offers; like me, she's a no bullshit, low drama, "fuck it I'll do it myself" type of lady and she's easy to talk to and joke with.
It never occurred to me that the sort of out of pocket comments I catch coming out of the mouths of my white coworkers would ever come out of hers. Because she was my neutral ally. Neutral in that we weren't bound by our sex or our color or departments, but by our mutual respect and understanding of the other's daily fight. We can read each other's silences and dead pan expressions and side eyes. It's nice to have that sort of relationship in the workplace. Especially in this particular work place at a time when I'm coming to a crossroad and any little sly comment I overhear has me wanting to give up and get out. So you can imagine the remorse I felt yesterday afternoon when, in retelling a not so funny story, my neutral ally referred to another dancer and myself as "blackies". I questioned it before realizing what I'd heard and when she repeated it, I knew I'd lost one of the last things keeping me sane at that job.
A few weeks ago, I confronted my boss about using "nigger" in my presence. She's tall white mid-aged Bay area bred women who mentions at least once a day that she graduated from Columbia and at least once daily that she doesn't feel good. Working with her can be a struggle in keeping my positive outlook. She preaches positivity ad nauseam, but can be such a fiercely negative person. She talks shit about students and other coworkers. She's an attention whore and a bit of a megalomaniac. She regularly sticks her nose in shit that has nothing to do with her. She complains more than I can bear most days. She has a tendency to overreact and jump to conclusions which completely baffles me; don't you eventually learn why you shouldn't do that? All this of a Landmark Forum person. BUT... but she is a very good boss. She acknowledges me and rewards me. She's honest and open and I can say she's one of the best bosses I've had the pleasure of working with. She's been very supportive of my artistic ventures and was largely responsible for the total transformation of work ethic. I've learned so much about life and career and love and I actually owe a lot of my happiness to her.
Now, with all that said, it's tricky, raising the topic of racism and language with her and in a place like this. She suffers from that Carson Daily syndrome; Carson liked to switch up his host speak depending on the day's guest; that is, hood talk to the rappers, SAT language to politicians, and milquetoast to the teeny boppers. She likes to think she's down, which is fine, but remember that you're white and I'm black and you have no business saying "nigger" in my presence, no matter the context. I'm a fan of Quest and I think "Sucka Nigga" is a beautifully written etymological study of word. I don't need to hear you sing the lyrics word for fucking word right in front of me. I don't think you're hip. I don't think you're down. Yes, I do know the kind of person you are; like me you're curious about the world and it's people and their ways. But unlike me, you're not in the position to know why a filter is necessary when exploring. You've never had a noose drawn around your neck in a class photo. No one's ever called you "darky" or "nigger" or "nappy head hoe" or "black bitch". You're ignorant to my struggle. This is the same woman who was surprised by the number of black people who work at a health food market near the school and how nice and seemingly educated they are. The same women who says she doesn't know how to tell if a black man is handsome. I get it when it when she says she doesn't mean any harm and that she's just wants to know, but that doesn't make her comments any less out of pocket. And refraining from a word or being more aware of your words doesn't change the ideas you've got wired in you about a group of people.
This is my work environment. What is it about me that makes people think they can be that comfortable around me?
2. My wallet fell out of my bike basket yesterday morning as I was speeding to catch my train. There is a can collector who circles the train station every Friday. Sometimes, he talks out loud to no one in his strange voice about whatever is on his mind. He never bothers me much so I just ignore him and keep it moving. Well this strange old man was the one who found my wallet and handed it to the taxi stand at the train station. When I see him again, I going to thank him graciously and befriend him.

Lettuce on IMDb!
I googled myself a bit ago (because the song suggests it's a good idea) and I've discovered that I'm listed on IMDb. I had to blink a few times when I saw it, but sure enough it's me. I'm listed as a dancer in The Audition, an indie film I worked on last year written and choreographed by Jim Augustine. That reminds me. I never did get a copy of that film.
In other news...
Hooray for me! I just received an invitation to a second callback for Misnomer! I've never been this close. Wish me merde! View blog reactions

Weekend in Boston

I spent the weekend in Boston with family. My twin cousin graduated from college. I saw family I hadn't seen in too long and family I could've gone without seeing for a few more years. I had way too much to eat and I hardly slept a wink, but it was a joy to be there.
Boston is a cool little city. It's got nothing on New York, of course, but it's cool in its own ways. I want to take a longer trip up to explore. While I was down there, this fly bella named Martini of beyondbostonchic.blogspot.com stopped me on the subway and complimented me on my ensemble. She took my photo and posted me to her blog. I was MAD gassed the entire trip back to New York! Here's a link to the post. I'm wearing my adorable taupe and chocolate striped silk buttoned down halter dress with matching vegan peep toe espadrilles and a cute green knit cropped trapeze cardigan. I looked adorable than mug... if I do say so.

On: self-promotion begets happiness or an epiphany regarding blatant bragging
I've been challenged by my Sister-from-another-City to get into the practice of bragging. We had a great conversation recently about what it is to be positive, vocalizing one's blessings, and the laws of attraction. Apparently the key to this women's inspiring disposition is her gift of shameless self-promotion (!); her ability to brag about her flyness daily. She totally blew my mind!
Growing up, the best grades were never high enough. The sharpest church outfit was never crisp enough. That cute boy on the block spitting game at you was always somebody else's first, someone flyer than you. I learned to remember to be humble because someone is likely going to knock you down. The closer you are to earth, the less painful the swipe from above (even if it's just outwardly; I'm a dreamer by nature ;P). Remember to be modest because the good and the happy are never too proud. So for me, humility meant never being too excited about all the great things that happened and politely acknowledging a compliment then moving on quickly. So imagine my simple mind trying to wrap itself around the idea of bragging as a good thing! That shouting your blessings from the highest peaks regularly will multiply your blessings! Word?
So I've been seriously ruminating on this idea. I've been Negative Nilly lately as I watch my peers being recognized and landing gigs left and right. The more praise people were getting, the more I felt like whatever I've got going on wasn't worth mentioning. I felt insecure and jealous. I just tried focusing on my own path and remembering to respect my time. But after this revelation of bragging, I began to see its value: (1) you have to let people know what's up for them to know what's up. People aren't trying to find you, they want you to come to them. When they see how fantastic you are they'll tell you so, but you've got to make sure they see; (2) reminding myself of my flyness, remembering to bask in my light, and putting into perspective all the greatness I'm creating will make me a happy, fulfilled person. UREKA!!!
****************************
I brag that I've finally and successfully kicked my PK habit.
I brag that I'm told that I'm loved daily.
I brag that I made good money last week doing something I love and I did it well.
I brag that I said "No, thank you." to something I didn't want to do even though it paid well, because it would surely be a mind-numbing, soul-killing gig.
I brag that I said no and I spent all day yesterday as I planned. I cleared the entire day so that I could stay at home and work on the shop and work on me.
I brag that I'm getting a raise.
I brag that I had the most decadent pistachio cupcake from Sweet Sugar Sunshine this afternoon and I nearly cried because it was just that good.
I brag that I bought four of those incredible treats and a slice of bundt cake to enjoy at home while I'm writing to you.
I brag that my googly eyes were returned last week... thrice!
I brag that I get to be creative all day everyday and that is truly a blessing.

Treasures Galore!
My brand new sewing machine is here... and before I've left even! How exciting! I damn near fell off my stoop when I saw that huge amazon.com signature smile beaming gleefully at me from it's craft-colored box! If I didn't have so many loose ends to tie up before I go (only three days left!), I'd start learning the thing now! It's a Brother. Beautiful machine... and I made it under my budget!
Goodness! My head is spinning with all the beautiful fabrics and prints and patterns I'm anticipating! ... and the color! Oh the COLOR! I can barely contain myself! Oh rapture!
In other news, I stumbled across a forty-year-old SLR camera in one of my mother's treasure chests. I'm so lucky to have such a shameless pack rat for a mother. She doesn't throw anything away and keeps her things in such pristine condition, even though she has no intention of ever using them. It's a blessing. So, this camera, a 1965 Canon Canonet G-III QL17, is a sight to behold. Haven't tried it yet and I don't expect anything spectacular to happen once I do, but I was so happy to find it!
Alright enough about me and the joy I find in material things. Off to finish tying those ends (checklist, packing, scheduling quality time with my peoples, etc.).
Good night all :)

So far, so good...
I had this really great two and a half hour conversation with my cousin last night. I consider him a male version of my sister and I really value his perspective. We talked about religion and his future plans and my trip. He inspires and supports and he's such a genuinely good hearted young man. I love that cat.
The shop is not doing as well as I'd anticipated at this point. I've sold 5 items. I expected to sell half my shop during the holidays. I guess this is a great lesson on the power of marketing and getting an early start. I plan on keeping the shop open while I'm away, but I'm going to make it very clear that I cannot ship while I'm out of the country. My brand new sewing machine arrives just after I leave but when I return, I'm planning to work on those old church dresses mom's kept all these years. They're all so pretty and in perfect condition; crinoline, lace, and sashes all as pristine as when my sister and I last wore them. They'll make beautiful summer dresses--both sexy and fun. I've already sketched out some ideas. I can't wait to get started on them!
As momentous as this trip could be, I feel like I'm being really casual about the whole thing. I haven't followed up with my non-familiar contacts and I'm not 100% sure what I'll be doing down there. I had it in my head that I would spend the time exploring, taking photos and footage of everything I see. I've become really interested in my mother's voodoo heritage and I hoped that I might be able to see the ceremonies with my own eyes. But after speaking with my cousin, Beverly, who I'll be staying with in Port-au-Prince, I'm doubting the possibility. She and my aunt Michaelle, her mother and the owner of the home/school/mission where I'll be staying when I get to Chambalain, are not supportive of voodoo. My not knowing the language well and being a stranger to the country doesn't really put me a position to go wandering off into the sticks looking for rawkus, gyrating practitioners. My less controversial plan was to go search for Haiti's art. Go to concerts, and galleries, and dance schools, and performances. I don't know where and if this is happening and if I will be privy to experiencing it, but I want to if I am able.
I bought myself a video camera with my sweet end of year bonus! It's pretty rad. Tiny little thing and light as a feather. On sale too. Here's my first test run:
I'm going to create a travel log with all my pictures, footage and journal. Stay tuned. For those of you who are interested, I was lucky enough to come across this blog at www.haitiphotos.com by a South Florida-based photographer. His images are very beautiful and inspiring. I hope that I can capture the spirit of Haiti similarly with my little digicam. It's going to be a wonderful trip.
Happy New Year y'all! Here's to exploration and growth in 2008! Suckaz :P

Retrospective: Late bloom in 2007
It's hard to believe this year is coming to a close. Though even on the very first day, 2007 seemed like it was moving too fast. In the beginning, I couldn't help but feel pressure and anxiety. There was the move from the old studio and all the drama that came with the five-month transition period. Through all of it, I was wasn't taking class or auditioning and I spent a good portion of the first half of this year vaguely unhappy. All my affirmations and positive thinking never materialized into action that I could be proud of. I just felt like I wasn't involved in anything that was valuable to me or the grand scheme.
At some point in the middle of this year, something shifted. Sometime after the move and after settling into my new part-time position. Things were happening. I landed two movies and a video. I stage managed my first and second works. I made tons of connections. I brought people together. I could now proudly send out e-blasts regularly to friends and family urging them to support me and my progress. My energy was pulsing. And I was happy. As I am now. I am so proud of what I've done with myself in 2007 (yaay me!).
Of course, all things could do good by a little refinement. I made a list of resolutions this spring. I called it An Idiot's Guide to Fresher Lettuce (2007 Edition). Of the 8 items on the list, I can honestly state that I've not successfully accomplished a single one. And I don't think of this as failure. Life is continuous growth, constant work and/in progress. I've rebuilt the list, adding new items and revisiting the old ones. Please stay tuned for that epic post.
'Til then, have a happy and safe New Year Holiday.
Pou tout moun Haitienne: Bonne Année! Bonne Santé! And Happy Independence Day!!!
